The Chair Frames
Child chair frames from Little Big Chair come in a variety of sizes to meet the differing needs of the kids and little people who will enjoy them. Click on any chair on the main shopping page to see it's measurements.
The frame is like the "bones" of the furniture and must contain the essential elements of the finished shape. The traditional armchairs are slightly higher in the front to provide a comfortable sitting angle. They are wider at the front and slightly smaller at the back in the tradition of fine furniture. I frequently incorporate curves in the back, arms and bottom edges to create visual softness and character.
The frames are constructed primarily of poplar with small amounts of oak, fir and pine. Little Big Chair cares about sustainability! Hardwoods are used in critical areas with softer ones for shaping. I've tried to engineer the arm joints, probably the most vulnerable spot, to be as indestructible as possible. I glue the joints and then use very high quality steel screws. Corner and cross bracing adds additional strength. Like most fine furniture, the legs are not the screw-on variety, but an extension of the frame, the only exception being the "bun" feet, which attach thru either a hanger bolt (a bolt with screw threads at both ends) or a wood dowel which is part of the foot. The bun feet are from Van Dyke's Restorers (see "Links" page). The Mod chair shapes are cut from cabinet grade plywood and connected with poplar.
I top off the frames with the Pirelli rubber webbing, stretch webbing or coil springs. Only the finest foam, cotton and dacron products are used. Twenty seven years of experience and an artistic approach to each step of the upholstery process create a beautiful enduring heirloom, which like all fine furniture can be re-upholstered before being passed to the next generation. This is not a mass produced manufactured product. Little Big Chairs are as special and unique as the people who will use them.
It's all in the details! It's all about quality!
